The ranch is a commercial cow-calf operation with a herd of 350 Black
Angus mother cows. In addition, we run about 40 registered Black Angus
females and 40 registered Black Angus herd bulls.
Our registered females are the foundation stock for our replacement
bull program. We only own females with proven EPD’s of low birth
weight, high milk production, and high weaning and yearling weights.
All our females are artifically inseminated with semen from some of
the most outstanding Angus bulls available. These include Connelly Bottomline,
Bar EXT Traveler 205, New Design 323, and T.C. Advantage.
The herd is divided into a spring and fall calf crop. We typically
retain our calves until they are 10-12 months old. Our fall herd contains
approximately 100 cows, and the spring herd approximately 250. J7 calves
have the proven genetics to show significant gain in the pasture and
on wheat. This past spring we sold 90 steers that were 10 months old
with an average weight of 826lbs.
We typically sell our calf crop by private treaty here at the ranch.
We also have available for sale a select number of registered bulls
and females.
MANAGEMENT AND BREEDING PROGRAM
The J7 Ranch works hard to manage our cattle so that they will please
not only us, but our customers and the beef industry as well. Black
Angus cattle were chosen specifically for their ability to excel as
seed stock under all ranch conditions. With both fall and spring calving
seasons, we are able to provide the right age of cattle for any customer.
Through artificial insemination we are able to use the finest herd bulls
of the breed on select groups of females.
All cattle produced at the J7 Ranch undergo a lot of scrutiny. We gather
data to identify superior genetics by having our cattle pass tests in
performance, disposition, fertility, maternal, carcass, and visual appraisals.
This requires intense record keeping and processing. We use the top-of-the-line
CATTLEMAX computer program to keep accurate data on each animal. We
are constantly evaluating our progress and looking for ways to add value
to our customers.
Our cowherds are run on improved and native grasslands, only being supplemented
in the winter or under extreme conditions. Our bulls are developed with
a limited amount of gain so they are capable of performing in the pasture
on a mostly forage diet. Calves are creep fed generally a couple of
months prior to weaning to ensure a good transition from mother to feedlot.
All cattle are vaccinated each fall and spring against all common cattle
diseases. They are also de-wormed and appropriate parasite controls
are used. All calves receive their vaccination at two months of age
and again one month prior to weaning.
